Internship in Listening Ministry
For some years, Manresa
sponsored an Internship in Ignatian Spirituality that was directed
by Fr. Bernie Owens, SJ With Fr. Owens' acceptance of a new
mission in Africa, Manresa revised the Internship in Ignatian
Spirituality into two separate but related programs: a Seminar
on Ignatian Spirituality and an Internship in Listening Ministry.
The Seminar on Ignatian Spirituality will be offered in 2013-2014,
and the Internship in Listening Ministry will begin in 2014-2015.

Seminar on Ignatian Spirituality
This seminar introduces
participants to Ignatian Spirituality. Ignatian Spirituality
is for ordinary people living ordinary daily life. Because it
insists that God is with us, this spirituality is a pathway
to deeper prayer, good decisions guided by the fruits of discernment,
and a life of service to others. It is rooted in developing
a real and personal relationship with Jesus and living as His
companion in service.
It is organized in five
The first is an Overview
of Ignatian Spirituality. Topics include "Consolation,
Desolation, and 'Our Way of Proceeding,'" the Spiritual
Exercises, the Examen, and Ignatian contemplation. This course
will meet every other Wednesday between September 11th and
November 6th. The cost is $150. Details.
The second is a consideration
of the Jesus of History and Christ of Faith.
Topics include the use of Scripture in study and prayer and
the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. This course
will meet from 7 to 9 PM on Wednesdays: November 20th, 2013,
December 4th, January 8th & 22nd, 2014, February 5th &
19th, and March 5th & 19th. The cost is $240. Details.
The third and fourth
mini-courses are weekend workshops, each costing $200.
he fifth mini-course
examines Ignatian Discipleship
. Topics include:
the Holy Spirit; Confirming and Conforming of Oneself to Christ;
a film presentation of Romero
; the Ignatian Pedagogical
Paradigm of prayer, action & reflection; and the Principle
and Foundation as the basis for Ignatian discernment. This course
will meet from 7 to 9:30 PM on every other Wednesday: April
2nd, 16th, and 30th; May 14th, 2014. Presenters: Steve Hurd,
SJ, Ann Dillon, and other presenters. The cost is $120. Register
Internship in Listening
Having completed the
five Seminar mini-courses, individuals may participate in the
Internship in Listening Ministry.
The Internship focuses
on developing the skills used in spiritual direction and in
spiritual conversations that take place in hospices, jails,
nursing homes, hospitals or pastoral settings.
The curriculum includes
developing listening and spiritual direction skills, the dynamics
of the Spiritual Journey, forms of prayer and ethical practices.
Workshops address the topics of grief, mid-life and aging, mental
health and the Twelve Step process. Presenters are members of
the Manresa staff and professionals in their respective disciplines.
Interns also engage
in spiritual conversation under the guidance of supervisors.

reflection paper for each
Take part in a synthesis seminar
Participate in all workshops and presentations
90 hours of practicum listening with supervision
Lead or guide a group prayer process; e.g.,
Lectio Divina, small group reflections
Receive ongoing spiritual direction
Make at least one individually directed five-day
It is anticipated that
the completion of all requirements takes 20 months.
The cost of the Internship
is $1,800, not including books or the silent retreat.
