Seminar on Ignatian Spirituality
&
Internship in Listening Ministry

For some years, Manresa sponsored an Internship in Ignatian Spirituality that was directed by Fr. Bernie Owens, SJ. With Fr. Owens' acceptance of a new mission in Africa, Manresa revised the Internship in Ignatian Spirituality into two separate but related programs: a Seminar on Ignatian Spirituality and an Internship in Listening Ministry. These will both begin 2014-2015, and will be directed will be directed by Fr. Steve Hurd, SJ and Ann Dillon.


Seminar on Ignatian Spirituality

This seminar introduces participants to Ignatian Spirituality. Ignatian Spirituality is for ordinary people living ordinary daily lives. Because it insists that God is with us, this spirituality is a pathway to deeper prayer, good decisions guided by the fruits of discernment, and a life of service to others. It is rooted in developing a real and personal relationship with Jesus and living as His companion in service.

It is organized into five mini-courses.

1st Mini-Course
An Overview of Ignatian Spirituality

Topics include:

  • Ignatian Spirituality, Consolation, Desolation, and 'Our Way of Proceeding'
  • The Spiritual Exercises: An Overview
  • The Dynamic of the Exercises and Ignatian Prayer
  • The Examen and Ignatian Contemplation

This course will meet Wednesday 7 PM - 9:30 PM
Sept 10 & 24; Oct 8 & 22; Nov 5, 2014
The cost is $150; $50 nonrefundable deposit required at the time of registration. Details.

2nd Min-Course
Jesus of History and Christ of Faith

Topics include:

  • Overview of Reading Scripture and Infancy Narratives
  • Kingdom of God: Mission and Vision
  • Jesus, the Healer
  • Jesus, the Reconciler
  • Jesus, Companion and Image of God's Love
  • The Passion and Death
  • Resurrection

This course will meet Wednesday 7 PM to 9:30 PM.
Nov 19; Dec 3, 2014; Jan 3 & 21; Feb 4 & 18; Mar 4 & 18, 2015

3rd Mini-Course
A Discernment of Spirits
Weekend Workshop

Topics include:

  • An analysis of Ignatius principles for discerning the movements of God and the Evil One in us
  • Practice in using these principles with case studies
  • Discussion in small and large group settings

This course will be held Friday December 12th 7:30 PM to Sunday December 14 12:30 PM, 2014
The cost is $200; commuter $150; $50 nonrefundable deposit required at the time of registration.

4th Mini-Course
A Discernment of God's Will
Weekend Workshop

Topics include:

  • An analysis of Ignatius' principles for attaining freedom of heart and making decisions to live in harmony with God's desires for us
  • Practice in using these principles with case studies
  • Discussion in small and large group settings

This course will be held Friday February 13th 7:30 PM to Sunday February 15th 12:30 PM, 2015
The cost is $200; commuter $150; $50 nonrefundable deposit required at the time of registration.

5th Mini-Course
Ignatian Discipleship

Presenters: Steve Hurd, SJ, Ann Dillon, and others
Topics include:

  • The Holy Spirit
  • Confirming and Conforming Oneself to Christ
  • Film Presentation of Romero
  • Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm of prayer, action & reflection
  • Principle and Foundation as the basis for Ignatian discernment

This course will meet Wednesdays from 7 to 9:30 PM on every other Wednesday:
April 1st, 15th, and 29th; May 13th, 2015.

Internship in Listening Ministry

Having completed the five Seminar mini-courses, individuals may participate in the Internship in Listening Ministry.

The Internship focuses on developing the skills used in spiritual direction and in spiritual conversations that take place in hospices, jails, nursing homes, hospitals or pastoral settings.

The curriculum includes developing listening and spiritual direction skills, the dynamics of the Spiritual Journey, forms of prayer and ethical practices. Workshops address the topics of grief, mid-life and aging, mental health and the Twelve Step process. Presenters are members of the Manresa staff and professionals in their respective disciplines.

Interns also engage in spiritual conversation under the guidance of supervisors.

Internship requirements include:

  • Complete the Seminar mini-courses and integration reflection paper for each
  • Take part in a synthesis seminar
  • Participate in all workshops and presentations
  • 90 hours of practicum listening with supervision
  • Lead or guide a group prayer process; e.g., lectio divina, small group reflections
  • Receive ongoing spiritual direction
  • Make at least one individually directed five-day silent retreat

It is anticipated that the completion of all requirements takes 20 months.

The cost of the Internship is $1,800, not including books or the silent retreat.
