Classes begin in early September and end in late May. The time commitment required of the interns includes four weekends during the course of the year and two Wednesday evening (7-10 PM) classes each month. In addition, interns will be expected to give sufficient time each day to prayer and study.

The general content to be addressed in the first-year classes and workshops will be:

  • A study of the major themes of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola with their special emphasis on the person and mission of Jesus;
  • Basics in skilled listening and communications, forms of prayer, and patterns of psychological maturation and faith development;
  • A weekend retreat in October to introduce interns and the internship team;
  • Three weekend workshops: one on the discernment of spirits, another on the discernment of God's will; and the last one on the practice of listening skills and a preparation for supervision in the second year of the program.

More specifically the focus of the first year of the Internship will be extensive reading, writing of reflection papers, and class discussion on these themes following the four weeks of the Exercises:

  • 1. The Presence of Divine Mystery in All Creation

  • 2. God's Unconditional Love of Me and Call to Service and Friendship

  • 3. The Mystery of Sin, the Rejection of God's Call

  • 5. A weekend retreat of faith-sharing on God in one's life

  • 6. Sin in the Elder Son and God's Mercy Toward Him

  • 7. On the Call of Christ

  • 8. God Becomes Human in Jesus; The Nature of the Kingdom of God

  • 9. A weekend workshop on the Discernment of Spirits

  • 10. The Kingdom of God versus the Kingdom of Satan

  • 11. The Beatitudes as the Core of Jesus' Teaching on the Kingdom of God

  • 12. The First Three Beatitudes: Being Poor in Spirit

  • 13. Beatitudes Four, Five and Six

  • 14. A weekend workshop on the Discernment of God's Will

  • 15. The Cross and Passion in Jesus' Life

  • 16. Suffering in God

  • 17. Jesus Resurrected, the Hope of All Peoples; Beatitude Seven

  • 18. Life in the Holy Spirit, the Gift of the Risen Jesus; Beatitude Eight

  • 19. A weekend workshop in the practice of cases in spiritual direction; preparation for supervision of an intern's practice of giving spiritual direction or some other ministry during the second year of the internship

  • 20. The Holy Spirit, Personal Prayer, and the Eucharist

  • 21. Finding God in All Things; the Synthesis of Ignatian Spirituality

The year ends with a personally directed Ignatian retreat for each intern, sometime during the summer. The retreat is a minimum of 5 full days in length, a maximum of 8 days.
