Die Jesuiten in der Philatelie

In 1995 Walter Nissel published a study and catalog of stamps with a Jesuit theme entitled Jesuiten im Spiegel der Philatelie (Heft 24 of the Gabriel-Bildhefte, Christliche Motive auf Briefmarken). Given the number of stamps with Jesuit themes issued in the following years a second edition seemed called for, and it is here accomplished magnificently by Master Wilhelm Remeš, Librarian and Archivist of the College of St. Aloysius in Linz/Freinberg of which Dr. Nissel is an alumnus. The 146 page volume contains more than 550 photos and 150 biographies. It lives up to its subtitle, providing a history of the Society of Jesus all over the world.

Die Jesuiten in der Philatelie: Eine Geschichte der Gesellschaft Jesu auf postalischen Belegen aller Länder
by Walter Nissel & Wilhelm Remeš
Verlag Hans G. Schönen, Edition St. Briktius, 2005

I welcome the opportunity to make it better known to visitors to this site. It has called to my attention the existence of many issues with Jesuit themes of which I had been previously unaware, and I am sure it will fascinate those interested in the subject of Jesuits on stamps. While it has not yet been translated into English, even the collection of photos, vastly expanded from the first edition, will enthrall those with limited knowledge of the German tongue.

I thank Master Remeš for his kind permission to use images from the book until scans directly from the stamps became possible.

Those interested in purchasing the book may e-mail Mag. Wilhelm Remeš. The book is available for 12.90 € plus postage. You should consult him concerning foreign currency.

Three Souvenirs of the Jubilee Year

You may also contact him for three other philatelic items he offers:

A) A personalized postage stamp (Austria) after a painting by Bartolomeo Altomonte, which is in the College of St. Aloysius in Linz.
B) A special cancellation for the Jubilee Year used on April 22, 2006 in the Foyer der Jesuiten, Bäckerstraße 18, 1010 Vienna.
C) A decorative envelope for the triple anniversary of St. Ignatius, St. Francis Xavier and (now) St. Peter Faber, featuring Konrad Baumeister's 1881 painting of the first vows at Montmartres.

He is currently asking € 2,50 for envelope + custom stamp and special mark without it being mailed — a nice memory of jubilee year.
And also € 3,20 for the same, but canceled with the date 22.4.2006 to each address in the USA.
