SUMMARY:Ignatian Spirituality through Film
DESCRIPTION:Sept. 20 – Mission: Joy – Finding Happiness in Troubled Times\nOct. 11 — Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio\nNov. 15 — The Whale \nManresa’s fall film series offers the unique opportunity to watch selected films as an act of contemplative prayer and self-reflection. Through the lens of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola\, we will use this contemporary art form along with St. Ignatius’ insight into the power of imagination toward the revelation of ourselves\, others and God. \nPrior to each meeting\, you will view the assigned film from the comfort of your own home using a streaming service. Handouts will be provided\, and we will join other participants via Zoom to share our thoughts and hear how others were impacted by the film and reflective exercises. \nFacilitators: Sergio Pagés and Carmen Soto graduated from Manresa’s Internship in Ignatian Spirituality. Both work with the Hispanic community through workshops and retreats. \nRegistration is closed.

SUMMARY:Praying with Art: Eastern Rite Icons 2
DESCRIPTION:Sept. 5\, 19\nOct. 3\, 17\, 31\nNov. 14\nDec. 5\, 2023 \nIcons\, more than any other form of art\, are meant to be prayed with. \nEastern Rite icons are quite different from the Western art we have concentrated on so far. The Western Church leaves artists free to paint religious images however they want; the Eastern Church provides guidelines to ensure that icons are theologically sound. That’s because icons are meant to proclaim the Gospel in images as the Scriptures do in words. \nIcons belong in churches\, not museums; they are sacred objects for the prayer corners of our homes\, not decorations for anywhere else. They not only recall historical persons and events\, but they are windows into heaven that put us into direct contact with the holy persons or with the enduring heavenly reality of the events portrayed. \nPlease join us and experience their spiritual richness. \nInstructors: Fr. Peter Fennessy\, SJ is a long-time member of Manresa’s ministerial team. Carole Sugrue served as a docent at the Detroit Institute of Arts for more than 30 years. \nRegistration is closed. Please call the front office at 248-644-4933 Ext. 0.

SUMMARY:Religious Sisters Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Four women who shaped Christianity \nFour women—Hildegard of Bingen\, Catherine of Siena\, Teresa of Ávila\, and Thérèse of Lisieux—have been honored with the title “Doctor of the Church.” But what does that title mean and what message do these women have for us today? \nDuring our time together\, we will look at the lives and teachings of these women in order to come to a deeper understanding of the impact they have had on our Church\, the world and our own lives. They may not have planned to be thought of as theologians\, but reflecting on their lives\, teaching and writings will have a profound effect on how we choose to live our faith. \nRetreat Directors: Fr. Fran Daly\, SJ was ordained in 1972 and has extensive experience teaching Ignatian spirituality and leading the Spiritual Exercises. From 2014 to 2021 he was Executive Director of Manresa Jesuit Retreat House\, where he continues to facilitate retreats and days of reflection. Sr. Kathie Budesky\, IHM graduated from Mundelein College with a Master’s Degree in Religious Studies and Spirituality and is currently the Director of Visitation North Spirituality Center in Bloomfield Hills\, where she is also a presenter and facilitator.

SUMMARY:Book Study: Soulful Spirituality
DESCRIPTION:Sept. 11\, 25\nOct. 9\, 23\nNov. 6\, 2023 \nBecoming fully alive and deeply human \nSpirituality has an indispensable role in the expression of our humanity. However\, spiritual practices can sometimes make us less authentically human. How can we grow in our spiritual journey so that we become fully alive and deeply human? \nDavid Benner presents a psychologically informed understanding of spirituality\, examining the difference between a deep and shallow religious experience and healthy and unhealthy relationships with God. This book will appeal to those seeking depth and substance in their quest for authentic spirituality. \nBefore our first meeting\, please read Part One\, Chapters 1 and 2\, and jot notes for the following reflection items: Chapter 1\, #4 and Chapter 2\, #4. Then read Part Three\, Chapter 8 and practice the four exercises. *Zoom instructions will be emailed to registered participants prior to each session. \nFacilitator: Rosemary Insley is a retired chaplain and bereavement counselor\, with Master’s degrees in Pastoral Studies and Social Work. As a spiritual companion\, she guides others in the Spiritual Exercises and in retreats.
