SUMMARY:Praying with Art: James Tissot’s Life of Christ - Part II
DESCRIPTION:Jan. 28 | Feb. 11\, 25 | Mar. 11\, 25 |  Apr. 8\, 22 \nDuring our second semester\, we will continue to look at and pray about the life of Christ as painted by the French artist James Tissot (1836-1902). After a powerful religious experience in 1885 Tissot abandoned the lifestyle and art genres that had until that moment made him respectively notorious and famous. He dedicated the rest of his life to researching and reproducing Christ’s life as it would have looked in the Holy Land of His day. We will begin with the closing events of Jesus’ public life and then look at His passion and death during Lent and His resurrection during Easter Week. You may follow the story in The Life of Jesus by Andrea Tornielli but this is not a required text. \nFacilitator: Fr. Peter Fennessy\, SJ is a long-time member of Manresa’s ministerial team.

SUMMARY:Compassion: The New Lenten Practice
DESCRIPTION:Mar. 12—Creating a Compassionate Way of Life\nMar. 19—Self-Compassion\nMar. 26—Widening the Circle of Compassion \nLent is the springtime of the Church\, a season that mirrors the new life emerging in the natural world. Lent rouses us to “repent and believe the good news.” Rather than giving up chocolate or coffee this year\, try cultivating compassion as a spiritual practice. \nCompassion is essential to human survival. It calls us to treat all others—in the family\, workplace and beyond—as we wish to be treated ourselves. Planting the seeds of compassion\, learning to be self-compassionate and widening the circle of compassion to include all beings may be more rigorous than you think. \nThis three-part\, online series is inspired by well-known author Joyce Rupp’s Boundless Compassion: Creating a Way of Life. Facilitated by certified Boundless Compassion facilitator Sr. Mary Dean Pfahler\, we’ll explore Rupp’s insights and enter into quiet reflection\, small group break-out sessions and communal prayer.  Come\, “grow in the kind of love that motivated Jesus to be a compassionate presence.” \nFacilitators: Mary Dean Pfahler\, SND finds joy in facilitating Boundless Compassion retreats and accompanying individuals and groups in spiritual direction and the Spiritual Exercises. Suzanne Carter is a retreat facilitator and spiritual director. She led women\, adults and children through faith-building programs in her parish for more than 18 years. \n*Zoom instructions will be emailed to registered participants prior to each session.

SUMMARY:Scripture Study:  Romans and Galatians
DESCRIPTION:Jan. 21 | Feb. 4\, 18 | Mar. 4\, 18 |  Apr. 1\, 15 \nThe experience of sin and grace is among the most fundamental concepts of all humanity and\, in particular\, the Christian faith. Romans and Galatians take on the topic in a way that is as relevant today as it was when they were written. While Romans explores the theological depth of this concept\, Galatians focuses more on defending the idea of salvation by grace against those who would add works of the Mosaic law to receive salvation. Join us we study these important books of the Bible. \nInstructor: Fr. Steve Hurd\, SJ is co-director of the Internship in Spiritual Companionship and a popular retreat director at Manresa. \nThis course is offered onsite (space limited to 16) or via Zoom.
